The Clew Bay Bike Trail is a combined bike and ferry route looping magical Clew Bay in Co. Mayo, including both Clare Island and Achill Island. The trail includes two short ferry journeys, one from Roonagh Pier, near Louisburgh to Clare Island and the other from Clare Island to Cloughmore near Achill Sound. The Clew Bay Bike Trail can start at any point and can be cycled in either direction.
Clew Bay Bike Trail
The Clew Bay Bike Trail curves around the coastline of Clew Bay, and visits Clare Island. This area is popular with visitors and its easy to see why, the scenery is absolutely magnificent and the towering peak Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain overlooks the entire route. The trail passes through some of Mayo’s most attractive seaside towns and along the way there is plenty to see and do.
Ferries
Ferries run between Clare Island and the mainland at Roonagh Pier near Louisburgh and Cloughmore near Achill Sound. One ferry ticket (cost €35) covers both journeys for you and your bike but tickets are not transferable – you must travel with the same company on both ferry journeys. Ferries must be booked in advance.

Bike Hire
Bicycles can be hired at several points along the Clew Bay Trail at Westport, Newport, Mulranny and Achill. Most providers also hire electric bikes. Clare Island has a small number of bikes for hire but these ones must be kept on the island, not brought on the ferries.
